"...We gave you the guidebook cause we thought you'd be a good navigator." "I am. Getting through this forest is easy with my eye." He tapped the side of his face.
"Well, say so in the first place, then." Jullya complained. "...Why are you following us again?" Spanner asked. "None of your business."

"Through the forest, of course." Pierre looked around before pointing in a seemingly random direction. "This way!"
The group started trekking through the forest's strange scenery. Yellow brick paths that led to nowhere, giant hedge mazes that grew naturally, and they even once came across a great oak tree that grew playing cards instead of leaves. A few times, they had been attacked by strange wild animals, such as a flock of very large, feathery birds with sharp talons, and a frumious monkey-like creature with giant, snatching claws, but Jullya had no trouble fending them off. "...Right." Pierre rested by a nearby tree and stood in thought for a while.
And then, they heard it. A faint rustling sound, through the woods, of something else approaching them. "...!" Shadow tensed up, and the rest of them could definitely sense the sharp, ruthless presence. "Well, well." Their pursuer spoke as she stepped out from behind the trees. "Look what we have here." A lady whose clothes definitely matched the surroundings. A brightly-decorated black suit, an expensive-looking cane, and a prim, ribbon-tied top hat above her bright pink hair. She was staring at a particular member of their group, and everyone else couldn't help notice certain similarities in their faces. A sister, perhaps? Or a cousin? "Six years is a long time, isn't it, Shadow?"

"Oh, I see." Rosie nodded. "...Wait, WHAT?"
"Oh, Ameliora." Celeste greeted Spanner. "It's nice to see you again. Is Dygo not anywhere near?" "Good day, madame." The maid replied with a curtsey. "Unfortunately, he is not. I am here escorting the rest of the group." "I see." She nodded. "It's getting dark, so how about all of you spend the night at my house?"

"I object." Shadow spoke plainly. "We do not require hospitality from evil. I fear that you would be undertaking some matter of scheme to sway us to your liking." "Oho, you're saying you don't trust your own mother?" She smiled in a complicated sort of way. It wasn't bitter, it wasn't sympathetic, and it certainly wasn't happy. It was the smile... the smile of a magician. A magician watching another on stage, and this other magician was an amateur which made little slip-ups, minor things that the audience didn't notice, but she could pick apart so easily. This was the smile she made as she watched from the stage wings, polishing her self-invented pack of cards which could shuffle themselves, set themselves on fire with a flick of a finger, and even hide a small pidgeon if she wanted, and waited for her turn in the spotlight soon.
Shadow, however, had no time for tricks. "I am saying that simple generosity is some way beneath one such as you." "Hmm. I suppose that's true." She conceded. "But, let us cut to the heart of this issue. Save why you don't want to for later; isn't the real question is 'do you have any choice'? As I've always told you, it's a sad fact of the world, Shadow. Those with power can do whatever they like with-" She wasn't allowed to finish speaking.
Shadow had pulled up his arm, pointed his finger at her, and fired out a giant, screaming black snake of a laser in her direction. Large enough to swallow a tree-trunk whole, it completely obscured his mother from vision as it tore apart everything in its path.
"....." Shadow's face did not change from start to finish. "So it comes down to this, after all." Celeste sighed, standing intact and fiddling with her brooch. "Don't think you can defeat me just because you've gone and seen the world for a bit. When will you learn, Shadow? You don't defeat someone like me using power." She pointed the end of her cane at Shadow, stopping just short of his chest, and all around the group, a circle of magic runes scattered through the forest lit up and the ground beneath them turned pink. Realising that he was in at a disadvantage within his mother's magic circle, Shadow shot himself backwards away from her, but this seemed to be Celeste's plan. Suddenly, there was a soft sound like pouring sand, and the form of Shadow blurred in mid-air, like a spinning top, and the same happened with the sky above them, with the clouds blending together as if beaten by an electric mixer. This sensation was over less than a second after it began, and nothing seemed to have changed, except for one thing: Shadow was now flying in the opposite direction.
"...Ah!" Pierre realised what had happened after a quick survey. Celeste had rotated their patch of forest by 180 degrees. She knew that Shadow would be able to resist any spell used on him, so she instead controlled his surroundings. A rotation of the forest with Shadow as its central axis - he was heading away from Celeste a moment ago, but with this new development, he was right on his way to impaling himself on his mother's cane, still raised and ready. Usually, Shadow would have been able to react and move himself out of the way. But because Celeste had been so close to start with, and Shadow had kicked back at such a high speed, there was no time at all for any evasion, and the tip of the cane hit him right between the shoulderblades. He didn't even need to guess what would happen next - this was his mother's favourite trick, after all. The tip of the cane contained a poison that would instantly send him into unconsciousness. And then, she'd drag him back to Sarbenzatio manor and give him another poison that, combined with the vicinity of the unique ore present in the manor walls, would suppress his magic for twenty-four hours. It had been used on him enough times for him to become sick of it. Of course, once was enough for that, but it had been used many times all the same.
Shadow fell unconscious.
"She... she just beat Shadow!" Rosie stared in awe. "I'm one of the only people who can best exploit his weakness." Celeste smirked. "He loses to his emotions too easily. He thinks he's being philosophical and thoughtful, but really they're just his volatile feelings. And the greatest emotion you can get from him is his hatred for his family. That's a big reason Darkness had his way with him so easily, too."
"Now, forgive me for that." She turned back to the rest of the group. "How many of you have I met before? Ameliora of course, and Mr. LeQuinze, we have met once or twice, and Darkness has told me you are Kionochi's princess, yes?" She looked at Tiana.

"Hmmm...I didn't know you could give up being a princess." She shrugged without expecting a response. "But anyway, we've been held up in this forest long enough." She dragged her cane down through the air for a moment, and it split apart as if she had pulled down a zip. Looking into the seam, one could see a large manor hall on the other end, almost as if this was a window in the air. "What about Shadow?" Rosie asked, looking at the previously menacing figure now lying on the ground. "The servants can take him in."

"...Whoah." The group stepped through the portal into what seemed like a whole different world. It was an elegant mansion, certainly, but in contrast with the gleaming classical Arcan manor, this was very stark and new, almost like a modern art gallery. The polished floor was laced with various paths into neon-white and flourescent-black, and pure white, splash-shaped pillars stretched up into the ceiling, surrounded by slowly spinning flat square frames, cyan, green, and magenta at once. Staircases were everywhere like streamers, heading out of the floor from a single spot like a plant, twisting through the air and connecting pillar to wall, ceiling to window, though no path seemed to lead nowhere. Behind them was a giant multi-layered glass front door, filled with water and containing several different types of small fish, and in the center of the main entrance hall was a huge metal sculpture, an abstraction of spheres and spikes that led one to either think of pleasure or pain. What dominated their view, however, was the mural on the wall straight ahead. It was composed of all manner of sketches and swirls, but amongst the harsh-coloured background, everything came together to form what was unmistakably a huge Sarbenzatio eye, within the symbol for the Circle.
"You are all free for the rest of the day." Cherry informed them. "I'll have the servants set up rooms for you and give you appropriate clothes for dinner tonight, which will be in the dining hall at 8pm sharp. Ameliora will tell you how things work around here, as will Seb if he takes enough of an interest in you." "Seb?" Spanner's face fell. "He's still here?" "Of course. Surely you must be able to recognise talent when you see it. In fact, he's head butler now." "Oh, great." The maid groaned.

"Seb..." Spanner looked away. "I guess you could say he's like Darkness Lite. Incredibly irritating, always acts as if he knows better than you, and I could never figure out for the life of me what was going on in that head of his." "True, he is somewhat audacious with his words." Celeste admitted. "However, you are now here not as a maid of the Arcan family, but as the representative of the fist symbol. It would be in his duty to treat you differently." "I'll believe it when I see it." Spanner murmured as their host walked away. "Well, it'll be a bit before our rooms are ready, so what do you say we should get up to?"

"WAITWAITWAITWAIT!" Tiana said, looking at one of the servants walking around. "Onbin, looklooklooklooklook." "...what?" "It's Billie!" "What?" "Come on!" She dragged him over to the tall red-haired girl, screaming, "Billieeee!" The servant turned and her face lit up. "Tiana! Is that you? And Onbin! It's great to see you guys again!" "Oh, Billie Jean!" Onbin said. "Duh." "You can't seriously say you forgot me, can you?" She chuckled. "What are you doing here?" "Oh, I work here." She grinned. "Look, look, look!" She yanked a wallet out of her pocket and opened it, shoving the pictures in their faces. "Oooh, he's so cuuuute!" Tiana squealed. "Well, all babies are." "That's Jose!" Billie grinned. "And I'm sure you can guess who the dad is." They were suddenly interrupted by faint music, and a man in an over-seaquined outfit moonwalking by. "Billie Jean is not my lover~" "Um...Billie?" "Don't acknowledge him." "Uh..." "But, the kid is not my son!" "He's back, guys!" She shouted. "...should we be concerned?" "Not unless he tries dangling the baby out a window." She huffed. "But no. I have no idea who that is, but he's been at this for months." "....right."

"Oh, before I forget!" She dug into her pocket again. "Hey, where's Kerri?" "In Dextera with Mia," Tiana sighed, "We were separated by the flood back in Arca." "Hm. Well, you wear two for now." She pulled out three silver chains with glowing circular pendants on them, each in a different color. "I know Onbin doesn't have any magic, so I got the help of my friend Erik and we made these." "Whoa, awesome!" Tiana watched the glowing, swirling thing. "What's it do?" "It'll lend some of Tiana and Kerri's magic to you so you can blow apart cars and stuff!" She grinned. "The stronger you two get, the stronger he'll get. It'll be a big help." "Awesome!" Onbin grinned, "Thanks!" "No problem. Ack -- I better go before I get in trouble. See you guys later!" "Bye, Billie!"
