This is possibly the perfect example of optimist-pessimist in PD.
Of course, we already knew who was who, but I like this better than "half empty-half full" XD

The door actually opened a few seconds before the pebble hit.
A dark hand lashed out and grabbed the pebble in a tightly clenched fist.
When the hand reopened, there was no pebble in there. Only sand.
(No, he doesn't have the crumble-things-to-dust power.)

"Essentially, the human body consists of three main parts: Mind, Body and Soul.
I'm sure you've heard of Holy magic, Black magic, and Soul magic, right? Those are the three strongest types, because they make the most of what humans already have, but they're also very hard to master.
Holy magic is based on the mind and its user's mentality. It's called 'Holy magic' because the religious figures of the past claimed it came from a mental connection with the gods, but that's been disproved.
'Black magic' is manipulation of flesh, blood, and bone. It's been labelled as a 'black art' because the ancient practitioners thought that messing around with living creatures was sacriligeous, and it's still kind of avoided in this day and age.
'Soul magic', the hardest of all three to use, was therefore discovered a lot later and has an ordinary, slightly boring name.
So those are the three basic types of magic. Everything else is just channeling your soul energy through a mix of your mind and body to create a type of energy which can influence its surroundings, which is what we call 'magic'.
Of course, the next step up from that is manipulating nature and the things around you, and it's been split up into six main elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Light, and Dark. There are of course, other base elements such as sound, luck and electricity, but those weren't classified as important enough in the original system.
Now, I'm sure that you can deduce from what I just said that depending on your mind and body, you could find certain types of magic easier than others, so people with similar personalities, ways of thinking, and physical condition will be good at the same type of magic.
.......Come to think of it, that might be a good explanation as to why your hand symbol doesn't work; your mind and body are just completely unsuited to emotion magic. It would be like trying to use a fork to eat soup - it's simply not designed to be used that way..."

(And of course, it's Sina (aka Sin) who decides to step in in place of Shadow to save him)
